We are pleased to convey the news that recent feasibility works completed by the design office was in receipt of high praise from senior figures within the engineering team of one of our most valued clients.

The projects in question were two Sainsburys stores (Bradford and Wakefield) where proposals called for comprehensive replacement of the store’s HFC refrigeration with new CO2 systems, inclusive of heat recovery to supplement the heat output of new air source heat pumps provided by the mechanical contractor.

Project Commentary / Challenges

For major works on Sainsburys stores, a Condition Review and Survey (CR&S) process is carried out, whereby the overall status and anticipated life span of the site’s infrastructure and equipment is assessed, and a high-level scope of works is agreed.

From this scope of works and a proposed store plan from the client, the design team set to work on calculating the estimated loads for cooling and selecting refrigeration plant capable of meeting the cooling requirements.

The team co-ordinated with the mechanical and electrical consultants to convey the information they required from the refrigeration equipment such as heat recovery, electrical loads and heating/cooling effect from the sales floor cabinets.

The team worked very hard to produce a highly detailed refrigeration plant layouts, inclusive of site-specific annotations regarding the refrigeration pack and gas cooler installation, elevation views of the plant area where applicable, plant room ventilation requirements amongst many other aspects of the design.

Through standardising drawing layouts, templates and details, the team was able to complete drawings which retained professionalism and consistency in presentation.

To accompany the plant layout drawing, copious detailed notes were articulated on the issued ‘CUE’ document read by the Sainsburys engineering team alongside the drawings. As with the drawings, the team was conscientious in ensuring notes were detailed, labelled accordingly and complimented the notes already written for CR&s, to create a coherent throughline of the design thought process.

All of this work was completed and delivered on time as per the deadline agreed with the other consultants and successfully presented in the DRM2 meeting where all designs/drawings/proposals were brought to the client.

Testament to the quality and detail of the work completed was the fact that the presentation was delivered successfully by someone who, whilst having a firm grasp of the projects, was otherwise someone not in the design department, had little preparation time and was not intimately involved with the design

Roles fulfilled:

  • Design Drawings (2D)
  • Feasibility Studies & Options Appraisal
  • Integrated Mechanical, Electrical & Refrigeration Solutions
  • Regulation & Compliance

Outcome and Value

  • Low-GWP CO₂ refrigeration solution aligned with the client’s sustainability objectives presented in very satisfactory manner and timeframe
  • Consistent and professionally laid out drawings through uniformed CAD standards and templates
  • Traceable design decisions and thought process facilitated by detailed annotations and commentary
