Overview
Orwell Design Associates provided the refrigeration design for a Tesco Express store in Cheltenham, incorporating a Space Engineering BIS (Booster Integrated Solution) system. The project required a compact, efficient solution capable of delivering both refrigeration and comfort cooling within the constraints of a limited plantroom space.
The Challenge
The site presented significant spatial and ventilation limitations. The plantroom could not accommodate a traditional refrigeration pack, gas cooler and separate air conditioning system, while restricted airflow through the plantroom louvres further constrained equipment selection.
A conventional approach would have required additional plant and airflow capacity, making it unsuitable for the site.
Our Approach
ODA specified a BIS system, integrating CO₂ refrigeration and air conditioning into a single, compact solution. By combining these functions, the design eliminated the need for a separate AC unit within the plantroom, freeing up valuable space and reducing airflow demand.
The system included three cassette units on the sales floor, providing both heating and cooling via CO₂ pipework connected directly to the central plant. An integrated false load coil within the gas cooler allows additional heat to be introduced into the system when required, supporting efficient heating operation.
This approach ensured the system could meet both refrigeration and comfort requirements without exceeding the physical or environmental constraints of the site.

The Outcome
